Annapolis, Maryland is not only the county seat of Anne Arundel County, but is also the capital of Maryland. According to the 2010 census, Annapolis had a population of over 38,000 people. Annapolis was the seat of the Confederation Congress, and its history dates back to the Colonial time period, known as “Providence”. Since those early days, Annapolis has become a beautiful city entrenched with rich history. These are just a few things to do, if you’re thinking about visiting or moving to Annapolis, the sailing capital of the United States:

#1 Visit The United Sates Naval Academy

The USNA was established in 1845, and is how most people know Annapolis. You can take a guided tour through the Naval Academy to learn about its history, what midshipmen go through, and to explore the beautiful campus. There is also the USNA Museum which has two floors of exhibits showcasing America’s history of sea-power. Depending on the day, you can also see a football or sport game!

#2 Walk The City Dock

If you want to properly take in Annapolis, you need to go downtown to the City Dock. This is the cornerstone of the heart of Annapolis on Main Street. You’ll find tons of local businesses with gift shops, restaurants and boutiques. You’ll see classic inns and galleries, and get a real feel for the area. Ego Alley is where you can tour boat Harbor Queen. If that is not your thing, you can relax to a sunset on the water.

#3 Take in the Arts District

If you visit West Street, you can dive into Annapolis’ art scene! There are restaurants, art galleries, music, painting, fine art auctions and art events. This is a ‘happening’ spot for many locals. If you’re in town at the right time, you can visit the First Sunday Arts Festival or the Chocolate Binge Festival.

#4 Explore Main Street

If nothing else, you must explore and walk down Main Street in historical downtown Annapolis. Walking this street, you’ll get a feel for four centuries of architecture that you won’t experience in many other cities. Between landmarks, local restaurants, Midshipmen walking around, the Chesapeake Bay, boats on the water, you’ll be in for a view you just won’t see anywhere else. It offers unique nightlife, dining, shopping, and cafes and shops.

#5 Shop at the Annapolis Towne Centre

If you’re looking for a change of scenery and a more ‘shopping’ area, drive to the Annapolis Towne Centre. A gorgeous Centre, you can shop and dine in. It’s about four miles from Annapolis, but has many retail stores and restaurants to choose from. There are summer concerts, and free parking.

#6 View the Sunset on Eastport

Eastport is the maritime district of Annapolis. On this side of the harbor, you can have a romantic evening watching the sunset over the water. You can embrace the brick buildings in the distance with all the spires and domes of the architecture nearby. You can kayak, take a canoe, or explore the Annapolis Maritime Museum. Lastly, for dining, Eastport offers “Restaurant Row” which is many of Annapolis’ most historic and well-reviewed restaurants. This row includes steakhouses, rooftop bars, and some of the best dining Annapolis has to offer.

#7 Stop in For a Bite

When in town, you may want to sample a meal at the Iron Rooster, Carrol’s Creek Cafe, Vin 909 Winecafe, Miss Shirley’s Cafe, Galway Bay Irish Restaurant, Osteria 177 or O’Learys Seafood Restaurant.
